    Business Writing and Communication Course

    Welcome Students!

    In this 24-hour course, you will develop the essential English language and business communication skills needed to express your ideas clearly, confidently, and professionally. Throughout the course, you will learn how to articulate your thoughts in a concise and organized manner, enabling your readers and listeners to understand your messages with greater ease.

    You will strengthen your business writing abilities by selecting appropriate formats for different audiences, choosing the right medium for your message, adjusting tone and formality, identifying the purpose of your communication, and delivering it effectively. Through practical tasks, real-world scenarios, and guided instruction, you will gain the tools necessary to communicate with clarity across a variety of workplace situations.

    Course Objectives

    By the end of this course, students will be able to

    • Initiate, draft, and respond to professional emails
    • Respond to inquiries clearly and appropriately (affirmative, negative, and neutral)
    • Summarize reports and key information accurately
    • Produce a written document using notes from a meeting, presentation, or discussion
    • Describe charts, graphs, data, and trends using accurate business language
    • Adjust tone, formality, and structure based on audience and purpose
    • Edit and proofread their own writing for clarity, grammar, mechanics, and coherence
    • Cite information taken from other sources appropriately
    • Build cohesion in longer written documents
    • Strengthen introductions and conclusions to improve overall message impact

    Students will be assessed on ongoing class activities, several pieces of writing, a piece of editing and other topics as determined by the instructor according to the student needs in their professional roles. Students should expect to spend part of each class writing and to do some reading and writing homework each week.
