    Welcome Access Students!

    This is where you will find additional information about your course as well as supplementary course materials, assignments, and resources. You will also be able to participate in class forums and discussions and fill out course surveys.

    About Access:

    The U.S. Department of State’s English Access Microscholarship Program is a learner-centered program that provides bright, but disadvantaged youth with an opportunity to learn English, develop civic engagement and leadership skills, and gain multicultural awareness through teaching the basics of American culture and values. The program benefits an equal number of 14-18 year old men and women from underprivileged families through after school instruction and intensive sessions. Access equips participants with skills that can lead to better jobs and educational prospects. Participants also gain the ability to compete for and participate in future exchanges and study in the United States. The Access Program has provided scholarships to over 180,000 students in 86 countries since its inception in 2004.

    The U.S. Embassy in Lebanon established the English Access Microscholarship Program in 2004. The Program provides 360 hours of English language training and 55 hours of enhancement activities focusing on an American cultural experience over a period of two years. AMIDEAST/Lebanon administers the Access program, in close cooperation with Public Diplomacy at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut.

    Instructors:

    All Access teachers of this book level are listed in a column to the right. You can click on your teacher’s name and communicate with him/her through the LMS.

    English Language Deliverables:

    In this course, you will be able to continue the remaining English Language instruction hours of the Access Program. Just like the face-to-face classes, you will be able to practice the four skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – by participating in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation exercises in an interactive environment through live sessions. You will also be able to work in groups and do group projects using the breakout rooms’ tool in your virtual classroom.

    Virtually Deliverable Enhancement Activities:

    In addition to English Language instruction hours, students will virtually participate in a variety of U.S. culture enhancement activities and personal development workshops. Such activities include (list subject to change):

    • Fulbright Youth Mentorship
    • EducationUSA & Career Orientation Workshop
    • Project Citizen Activity and Showcase
    • Elections
    • 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
    • Life Skills and/or Awareness Workshops
    • IT Skills Workshops for Online Learning
    • US Embassy Virtual Visits
    • Thanksgiving-themed Activity or Virtual Visit
    • Graduation

    Student Assessment:

    • You will be evaluated in a variety of ways throughout the course and receive feedback from the teacher to help you continue to improve your English language skills.
    • Similar to the face-to-face classes, you are required to do the unit tests, speaking and writing assignments, along with projects/presentations.
    • Student assessment is based on a scale of 100% with 70% as the passing grade.

    Attendance Policy:

    • By the end of the program, students must have attended at least 70% of classes (face-to-face & online combined) to keep their Access scholarship.

    Access Virtual Classroom Policies:

    • Students should log onto the virtual classroom at least 15 minutes before class to take care of any connection issues.
    • Students should join the class with camera, microphone and audio capabilities.
    • Students should keep their microphones muted, unless they want to make a comment or ask a question.
    • Devices must be charged overnight and ready to use on class time to avoid low battery issues.

    Access Policies:

    • All handouts, documents, presentations are the Intellectual Property Rights of the Access Program and the class instructors.  These materials are for your own personal use and should not be shared or reproduced on any public platform.
    • Students are expected to cooperate with each other and show respect and courtesy towards the teacher and other participants.
    • Be prepared to participate in class activities.
    • Make sure to have your class textbook with you for every class session.
    • Complete all home assignments before class.
