Conversation 1
Textbook: Skillful Listening & Speaking 2 (Units 1-5)
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Listening:
1- understand the general ideas of clear standard speech and recognize the main points;
2- identify specific details (e.g. examples, reasons, time signals …etc.) in a variety of listening texts on familiar topics;
3- follow short talks and discussions to listen for comparisons and contrasts;
4- listen to summarize the main ideas and the most important supporting details of a clear, well-structured lecture, presentation or talk;
5- recognize important vocabulary and infer meaning from context of audio material on familiar topics delivered in clear standard speech;
Speaking:
6- enter unprepared into conversation of familiar topics, express personal opinions and exchange information on topics that are familiar;
7- give a prepared straightforward presentation on a familiar topic in which the main points are explained with reasonable precision;
8- offer advice and make suggestions;
9- encourage communication and exploit a basic repertoire of language to help keep a discussion going;
10- discuss a community service project;
11- shift the topic, using suitable phrases to get the floor;
12- discuss urban environments and give a presentation on a city;
13- ask someone to clarify or elaborate what he or she has just said;
14- discuss, compare and contrast two companies;
express opinion, agreement and disagreement appropriately.
AMIDEAST Policy
- Participants are expected to come to class on time
- Mobile phones should be put on silent mode.
- No food or drink is allowed in AMIDEAST classrooms & labs.
- Break time is 15 minutes.
- No make-up quizzes are to be held. Absence due to an emergency situation is to be handled by the instructor on an individual basis. Trainees are to provide documentation for the emergency situation.
- Passing grade is 70%.
- Course evaluations are done on the 5th session.
- Participants are encouraged to cooperate with each other and show respect and courtesy towards the instructor & other participants.
