    Textbook: Skillful Listening & Speaking 4 (Units 1-5)

    Learning Outcomes:

    By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

    Listening & Critical Thinking Skills:

    1-     understand a wide range of audio material and identify finer points of detail including opinions and implicit attitudes;

    2-     grasp concepts of complex theories and apply them to other situations;

    3-     identify key information in argument in most lectures, discussions and debates with relative ease;

    4-     select information for notes and summaries;

    5-     comprehend fundamental aspects of qualitative research including organizing qualitative data and identifying representative samples;

    6-     identify and use illustrative examples to support an argument;

    7-     follow reasons and evidence provided in extended speeches and anticipate conclusions accordingly;

    8-     recognize logical order of extended lectures and presentations;

    9-     define evaluation criteria and assess/make judgements in accordance;

    Speaking:

    10-  select a suitable phrase from a readily available range of discourse functions to preface his remarks appropriately to get the floor;

    11- argue a position convincingly and formulate/easily keep up with a debate, even on abstract, complex unfamiliar topics;

    12- give a clear, well-structured presentation of a complex subject, expanding and supporting points of view at some length with subsidiary points, reasons and relevant examples;

    13- identify primary and secondary sources of information in an academic context and conduct a survey;

    support and present a proposal of an action plan.

    AMIDEAST Policy

    • Participants are expected to come to class on time
    • Mobile phones should be put on silent mode.
    • No food or drink is allowed in AMIDEAST classrooms & labs.
    • Break time is 15 minutes.
    • No make-up quizzes are to be held. Absence due to an emergency situation is to be handled by the instructor on an individual basis. Trainees are to provide documentation for the emergency situation.
    • Passing grade is 70%.
    • Course evaluations are done on the 5th session. 
    • Participants are encouraged to cooperate with each other and show respect and courtesy towards the instructor & other participants.
