    Textbook: Skillful Listening & Speaking 4 (Units 5-10)

    Learning Outcomes:

    By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

    Listening & Critical Thinking Skills:

    1-     take detailed notes on a lecture, seminar, podcast…etc. on abstract and complex topics with relative ease;

    2-     critically assess source validity and analyze citations;

    3-     differentiate between fact and opinion;

    4-     distinguish between self-evident statements and statements that need justification;

    5-     identify maximizing language usage and indication;

    6-     follow extended arguments, identifying implicit assumptions, counter arguments and refutations, consistency of reasoning …etc.;

    7-     use visual aids and diagrams to better understand and think about the content of a presentation;

    8-     identify strengths in theories and arguments and evaluate them to reach a more balanced decision about what information to select or reject;

    Speaking:

    9-     easily follow and contribute to complex interactions in group discussion, seminars…etc. even on abstract, complex unfamiliar topics;

    10- give clear, systematically developed presentations on complex subjects, highlighting significant points and relevant supporting detail, integrating sub themes, and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion;

    11- emphasize important information while giving a speech by using techniques such as pausing, repetition and contrastive pairs;

    12- negotiate effectively when discussing ideas or making suggestions to reach an agreement or organize an event, program…etc.;

    13- argue a formal position convincingly and debate, extending arguments, responding to questions and comments and answering complex lines of counter argument fluently, spontaneously and appropriately;

    14- create and present content supported by visual aids (e.g. an advertisement);

    15- incorporate hedging linkers, reformulating and monitoring to manage conflict situations.

    AMIDEAST Policy

    • Participants are expected to come to class on time
    • Mobile phones should be put on silent mode.
    • No food or drink is allowed in AMIDEAST classrooms & labs.
    • Break time is 15 minutes.
    • No make-up quizzes are to be held. Absence due to an emergency situation is to be handled by the instructor on an individual basis. Trainees are to provide documentation for the emergency situation.
    • Passing grade is 70%.
    • Course evaluations are done on the 5th session. 
    • Participants are encouraged to cooperate with each other and show respect and courtesy towards the instructor & other participants.
