Level 1 Course (CEFR A1)
Description
This 42-hour course is designed for beginners who need a well-grounded introduction and review of basic language structures such as grammar, functions, and vocabulary. This level provides a solid foundation in the language and covers contemporary, real-world topics. Students will engage in a multitude of fun, personalized activities that help develop the four skills of English: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Course Objectives
With a learner-centered approach, the course is an opportunity for students to be able to develop basic conversational language tools. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Introduce oneself and greet others using the adequate grammatical structure (affirmative statements, verb to be)
- Name objects, give location and talk about cities and countries (use descriptive adjectives and prepositions)
- Ask and give information (questions formation and short answers)
- Talk about family, work, and daily routines (use time expressions, wh-questions)

Student Assessment
You will be evaluated in a variety of ways throughout the course and receive feedback from the teacher to help you continue to improve your English language skills. Student assessment is based on the following criteria, on a scale of 100%. The passing grade is 75%.
Attendance Policy
Students cannot miss more than 8 hours (20%) of class time in order to pass the course. Late arrivals are counted towards the 8-hour limit. Students who are absent for two consecutive classes will receive a phone call from the EL Department to check on reasons for absences.
Class Rules
- Arrive to class on time.
- Be prepared to participate in class activities
- Bring the class textbook and notebook to every class session.
- Be sure your mobile phone is on silent.
- Do not bring food or drinks into class.
- Complete all homework assignments before class. (This helps ensure that you progress more quickly!)
