Textbook:
‘The Official Guide to the TOEFL® Test’, 5th Edition
Course Description:
This course is designed to be a preparation for the students to sit for the TOEFL/iBT exam that will evaluate their English proficiency level. As the students have sat for the test before, this course is seen as an advanced level in their training. This means the course will use the most recent edition of the official guidebook of test preparation but with a more stretched discussion of the skills. This is to train students on coping more effectively with both exam stress and the university-level demanding learning experience. The material of the book is not seen or practiced as only test-taking and test-passing skills but also as fundamental academic skills. That is why the online synchronous classes will include some commentary on academic performance and on how to handle academic content. Each session will cover two skills; roughly an hour for every skill.
The class will be a quick review of 2-3 language skills with examples of how they show up in the exam; instruction will then be followed by working on a sample test with a discussion, analysis, and feedback on student performance. For every two-hour synchronous session there will be a one-hour asynchronous one. This means the instructor will open an online session where students will sit to work on a specific task under the supervision of the instructor. No instructions will be given, the instructor will interfere only when consulted.
The course ends with a 30-minute private meeting (an individualized conference) where the instructor will give a private virtual face-to-face feedback to each student alone on his/her last writing task and will pose a question where the student will be asked to take 20 seconds to prepare an improvised yet academically-structured talk that should take 60 seconds. The student will then get feedback on this performance as a final advice from the instructor on the student’s overall academic performance.
