    Week 1: Introductory Lessons

The goal this week is to acquaint students with the basics of the SAT. The first module in each section is essentially a “tour” of that section, giving students a sense of what to expect before beginning their first practice exam. The discussion of thinking mathematically on the SAT, which is a topic many students struggle with, will also begin this week. This week, students will be taking a look at some mental math tactics that can save them time and improve accuracy. In week two week, math strategy will be explored more broadly.

    Week 2: Writing and Math

During this week, students will be doing a little Math and alternating between the two “verbal” sections of the SAT: Writing and Reading. One advantage of going back and forth like this is that students will be able to see both the similarities and the differences between these two sections. Writing and Reading test students language skills in different but overlapping ways, students should not be surprised if they find that working on one section helps them with the other.

Practice SAT #1 (Must complete by October 25th)

This week, students will be taking a full-length practice SAT. Students have access to full-length practice exams through Magoosh. Students must make sure they are taking practice test #1. When taking practice exams, students must mimic the conditions of the test as closely as possible: no phone, no music, no internet, and no TV! They need 3 hours of complete solitude for this. For now, they can skip the essay, but they should definitely take a look at the prompt.

    Week 3: Reading and Math

This week, students will expand into a discussion of the basics of the Reading section and delve into the different question types they can expect to see. On the Math front, students work on fractions and deal with another potentially tricky set of topics: percents and percent change.

In Writing, students will be looking at punctuation and organization. In Reading, students will focus on the role played by logical reasoning and vocabulary. Finally, students will continue working up the SAT Math skill tree, focusing on algebra, word problems, and geometry.

Week 5: Reading, Math, and Practice SAT #2

This week, the focus returns to Reading. Having sketched out the basics in Part A, students will now look at some of the trickier question and passage types. Week 7: Writing and Math

The Writing topics covered this week are a bit different: style, tone, and over- all organization are inherently a little more subjective and less rule-bound than, say, where to put a comma. If students find they strongly prefer (or strongly dis-like) these types of questions, take note! On test day, students can use these preferences to decide which problems to tackle and when.

In Math students will be reviewing geometry. Even if students are fairly comfortable with this material, it is worth reviewing, since it is much easier to do well on trigonometry problems if students have a strong understanding of triangle and circle properties.

    Part C: Advanced Topics and Review - November 26th - December 10th

In the final part of the course, students are going to work more on the practice problems and scale back just a bit on the weekly lessons. Students will still be learning new SAT content (primarily math), but their main tasks are to review, consolidate, and apply what they have already learned.

New in this part will be the use of the Custom Practice feature, which students can find by clicking on any of the section names at the top of their screens when logged into Magoosh. If they click “Math,” for example, they will get a “Math Practice Questions” menu that allows them to pick math subjects to practice, along with difficulty level and number of questions. For now, when they see a section-specific “Custom Practice” item, select “Unanswered” and consider using the default “Adaptive” difficulty setting, which will adjust the difficulty based on their level of performance. As for subjects—it is the students’ choice. Students should pick the ones they want to improve upon, or they can hit “Select All” for a comprehensive challenge.

Week 8: All-Section Review, Advanced Math

At this point, students will have seen all of the basic Reading and Writing content that they are will be expected to know on the test. They have learned some strategies for working through each section. It is now important for them to keep practicing these strategies at least a little bit each week. Accordingly, this week and next week will focus on practice across all three of these sections. To really challenge themselves in these areas, they should focus on the problem sets under “Optional Reading.”

Students also explore the last few Math topics that they need for the exam. These are not as fundamental as the topics covered in Parts A and B of the course —if they are still struggling with anything from those weeks, it is recommended that they review them independently.

Students must make sure they have a solid understanding of the basics—arithmetic, algebra, and plane geometry—before tackling assignments that are starred* as optional.

    Week 9: All-Section Review, Advanced Math & Mock SAT#3

Just as with week 8, the focus this week for Reading and Writing is on practice and review. This is the time for students identify any weak areas that they haven’t had a chance to work on until now, and to review any lessons that can help them strengthen their knowledge in those areas.

In Math, students will begin the most advanced math material that is covered on the SAT. Again, if they are struggling with any of the Part A / Part B Math topics, they must review them carefully and independently.
